Laurel & Grouse, one of Johnstown’s newest upscale dining destinations. It’s located at 402 Chestnut Street in the historic Cambria City neighborhood of Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
About the restaurant
Laurel & Grouse opened in 2024 in the space formerly occupied by the Back Door Café. The restaurant was created by husband-and-wife team Mike and Stacy Isabella, with the goal of bringing contemporary American cuisine to one of Johnstown’s most historic commercial districts. Stacy grew up in nearby Salix before returning to the area, while Mike is a chef known nationally from his appearances on Top Chef.
The name reflects Pennsylvania’s heritage:
- Laurel = the Mountain Laurel, Pennsylvania’s state flower.
- Grouse = the Ruffed Grouse, Pennsylvania’s state bird.
Cuisine
The menu changes seasonally but focuses on refined American cooking with Pennsylvania and Mid-Atlantic influences.
Popular dishes include:

- Creative desserts like Crêpe Brûlée and campfire-inspired s’mores
The cocktail program is also a major attraction, especially its extensive martini selection. The Blackberry Lychee Martini has become one of the restaurant’s signature drinks.
Atmosphere
The restaurant combines:
- Historic Cambria City architecture
- Warm stone and wood finishes
- Modern upscale dining
- A relaxed but polished atmosphere
It’s designed for date nights, anniversaries, celebrations, and business dinners rather than casual pub dining.
