Rusty Cat Cafe
Rusty Cat Cafe is Johnstown’s first cat café—a combination coffee shop, light restaurant and adoption center where visitors can meet cats looking for permanent homes. It opened in downtown Johnstown on Valentine’s Day 2026 at 338 Walnut Street and is owned by Donna Christopher.
What makes the café especially meaningful is its partnership with the Johnstown Animal Welfare Society, or JAWS. The organization supplies rescued cats from local foster homes, while the café gives them a comfortable, cage-free environment where potential adopters can spend time with them and learn their personalities. The café’s original inspiration came after 19 feral cats living behind the building were rescued, treated, spayed or neutered and eventually placed in homes.
The interior has a playful Western and cowboy theme. The cat lounge is separated from the dining area by large windows, so customers can watch the cats even without entering the room. The cats have climbing structures, lounging areas, a walkway near the windows and even a television showing birds and squirrels. The separation also means someone with allergies—or someone simply interested in coffee and lunch—can enjoy the café without entering the cat area.
Visiting the cats
The café normally houses approximately 15 adoptable cats at a time, rotating animals through as they find homes. By June 2026, just four months after opening, the café had reportedly helped 65 cats get adopted. Adoption applications are handled through JAWS rather than directly through the café.
Cat-room visits currently cost $10 per person for 50 minutes. Walk-ins are allowed when space is available, although reservations are recommended. Children 13 and younger must have an adult with them, guests sign a waiver, and visitors are asked not to pick up or chase the cats. Photography is welcome, but flash photography is not permitted.
Coffee and food
Rusty Cat Cafe serves Pittsburgh-based La Prima Coffee, along with lattes, cold brew, tea, lemonade, hot chocolate and Western-themed specialty drinks. Some of the more imaginative names include the Calico Campfire, Siamese Silk, Lavender Lasso and Peanut Butter Purr Slinger.
Food choices include pastries, scones, muffins, cupcakes and breakfast sandwiches, plus lunch items such as chicken salad croissants, tuna melts, buffalo chicken sandwiches, BLTs and salads. Much of the café’s merchandise also features original artwork created by Johnstown-area artists, with designs inspired by real rescued cats and their stories.
A larger community mission
The café is more than a novelty. Johnstown has been dealing with a serious stray-animal problem, particularly since the city lost its animal-control contract in 2023. JAWS coordinates foster homes, veterinary treatment, adoption work, low-cost spay-and-neuter assistance and neighborhood trapping programs. Rusty Cat Cafe gives those efforts a highly visible downtown home where people can connect personally with animals rather than only seeing their photographs online.
