Morley’s Dog

Verse 1
In eighteen seventy, so the old folks say,
James Morley brought a faithful dog from Philadelphia way.
Made of iron, proud and still, beneath the mountain fog,
He kept his watch on Main Street there, old Morley’s iron dog.

Chorus
Oh, Morley’s Dog, stand strong and true,
The flood came down, but it could not bury you.
Through the smoke and broken timber, through the rain and rising fog,
Johnstown found its courage in old Morley’s Dog.

Verse 2
Then May came dark in eighty-nine, the clouds were hanging low,
The water broke the valley wide and swept the town below.
It carried homes and railcars down, through timber, stone and log,
And somewhere in that raging tide went Morley’s faithful dog.

Chorus
Oh, Morley’s Dog, stand strong and true,
The flood came down, but it could not bury you.
Through the smoke and broken timber, through the rain and rising fog,
Johnstown found its courage in old Morley’s Dog.

Verse 3
They found him in the wreckage near the old Stone Bridge,
Battered by the angry flood and buried by the ridge.
They raised him from the ruined town, beneath the morning fog,
And brought him home to stand again, old Morley’s iron dog.

Verse 4
The years rolled on through winter snow and summer’s golden flame,
The people passed his corner by, and everybody knew his name.
They patched his ears and painted him, through sunshine, frost and fog,
For Johnstown keeps a place of pride for faithful Morley’s Dog.

Chorus
Oh, Morley’s Dog, stand strong and true,
The flood came down, but it could not bury you.
Through the smoke and broken timber, through the rain and rising fog,
Johnstown found its courage in old Morley’s Dog.

Bridge
Some say he saved the whole wide town,
Some say he barked the warning down,
But legends grow where brave hearts stand,
And hope is passed from hand to hand.

Verse 5
Now his likeness guards the city where the mountain rivers run,
Watching over Johnstown in the rain and morning sun.
A little scarred, a little worn, but standing through it all,
A memory made of iron that refused to break or fall.

Final Chorus
Oh, Morley’s Dog, stand strong and true,
The flood came down, but it could not bury you.
Through every loss and every storm, through every rising fog,
The heart of old Johnstown still beats in Morley’s Dog.

Outro
So sing it through the valley, let the Alleghenies ring,
Of a town that rose from sorrow and learned again to sing.
And when the waters trouble you and darken every road,
Remember Morley’s faithful dog—and help each other bear the load.
